Minimising waste - what can we do?

Like all communities, waste is one of the issues our district wrestles with every day. There are issues around how it is generated, how it is managed and how it is reused, recycled or disposed of. The fact is, waste impacts on all of us - in terms of recycling, rubbish collection, climate change, community education, food waste and more. The big and complex issues of waste are not going away. Here are some ways that each of us are able to make a difference everyday.

What is the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan?

Every six years Council is required to review our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. This new plan will guide the waste work that we do now and in the longer-term to ensure we are protecting resources and the environment for future generations. To read the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, please click here.

The plan will outline the five areas of opportunity that we hope to make the most of and the specific actions that will get us to our targets. But there are many different actions we can take to make the most of these the five big opportunities, so that's where we need your help.

This survey will outline each opportunity area and a variety of actions to help us reach that goal, but feedback from the community will drive the selection of those actions. But we know times are tough, so we want less waste, not to waste money. Please consider costs when evaluating the potential actions.

The Five Areas of Opportunity

1. Promote waste reduction and local circular economy principles

2. Keep more out of landfill

3. Improve waste services

4. Work with others to reach our shared goals

5. Reduce the impact of waste on our environment

How can I get involved?

This consultation will be open until 7 April 2024. To have your say, click here, complete a hard copy at any Council office or library or stop by and have a chat with Council's Waste Minimisation Officer at any of the community drop-in sessions below.
