What this policy covers

We, Central Otago District Council, take our privacy obligations seriously and we’ve created this privacy policy to explain how we treat your personal information collected on this website. Personal information is information we hold which is identifiable as being about you.

Privacy is important to the Central Otago District Council. Council’s full Privacy Policy (PDF, 168.6KB) sets out how and why the council collects and stores personal information, what we will use it for and with whom we can share it.

The Privacy Act 2020 (‘Privacy Act’) and its privacy principles guide this policy. We take our obligations under the Privacy Act seriously and this policy will clarify the rights of anyone engaging with council under the Privacy Act.

What personal information we collect

Profile Information

We collect information from you when you register to use this site. This includes your email address and additional demographic information as provided by you on the registration form.

Please note that you are able to browse any publicly accessible sections of this website completely anonymously without signing up.

Engagement Information

The content you create as part of your interactions with this website. These can include responses to surveys, comments on discussion forums, or any of the other engagement opportunities available here.

Usage Information

We collect information about your usage of the site, such as pages visited, documents downloaded, etc.

IP Address

An IP address is a number automatically assigned to your computer whenever you are surfing the world wide web. Web servers automatically identify your computer by its IP address. Council collects IP addresses for the purposes of system administration, to report aggregate information to our internal customers and to audit the use of our site. When visitors request pages from Council, our servers log the visitors' IP addresses. We do not normally link IP addresses to anything personally identifiable, which means that a user's session will be logged, but the user remains anonymous to us.

Statistics

Council may collect statistical information about your visit to either help us improve this site, or to determine traffic patterns and volumes. This information is aggregated and non-personally identifying and is viewable by our website's administrators.
