The Alexandra Miners Village and Riverside Park Trust (the Trust) has a vision to rejuvenate lower Tarbert Street in Alexandra by creating a new public space development at the junction of the Clutha/Mata-au River and Manuherekia River.
The Trust has taken inspiration from similar projects that have reinvigorated under-utilised spaces across New Zealand including the Wellington and Picton waterfronts. Walkways, terraces and seating have transformed these areas into attractive spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy. These improved spaces are the building blocks from which businesses and activities can grow.
Community feedback was given in 2022 through a District-wide consultation on a concept plan. The results of that survey area available here. Over the past year, the Trust, Aukaha and Council staff have been working together to progress that concept plan into a developed design. See an artist impression above. The developed design has been split into three stages to bring the project within achievable funding parameters.
Stages 1-2 orange dotted line Stage 3 blue dotted lineStage 1: Plaza and river access (2024) Orange dotted line
Reduced developed design to align with achievable funding levels
Key infrastructure is in place for enhancement when further funding becomes available
Stage 2: Ongoing enhancements to Stage 1 (2024 – 2028) Orange dotted line
Increase in plaza size
More plaza trees, bench seats, bike racks, and planting
Bespoke balustrade
River track upgrade to become wheelchair accessible with rest areas developed
Pontoon
Stage 3: Play area (to be considered in the next Long-term Plan). Blue dotted line
The aim is for the park to help integrate the rivers and riverside with the pedestrian heart of Alexandra, become a space for family-friendly recreation and community events, as well as being a destination for cyclists and walkers using the network of local trails. The map below indicates the location of the future Alexandra Riverside Park.
Council will lead the project in partnership with the Trust and will be engaging with rūnaka (via Aukaha).
