When will construction begin?

Work will commence the week of 16 September 2024 with the creation of a new entrance into The Warehouse carpark. This will be followed later with the removal of a number of trees along the riverbank at the junction of the Clutha/Mata au River and the Manuherikia River to clear the canvas for work to begin along the riverbanks.

Will trees need to be removed from the site for this project?

Yes, all the Poplar, Willow and smaller tree species will be removed from the site at lower Tarbert Street to the Alexandra road bridge.

How will the trees be removed?

The trees will be removed in large pieces. Roughly 80% of the trees will be chipped and returned to CODC for use in future parks projects. The trees that are suitable will be provided to the Salvation Army to donate to the community for firewood.

After the trees are removed, will that make the riverbank vulnerable to erosion?

The roots from the removed trees will remain in the soil for stabilisation and to prevent erosion.

Will there be planting in place of the trees that are removed?

The river park area and the plaza area will be planted. CODC is currently having discussions with the Otago Regional Council with regard to the section of the river bank to the Alexandra bridge on timing of replanting.

What will be the environmental impact of the project on the site?

Pest plants such as Crack Willow and other weeds will be removed and replaced with a variety of plantings.

Will the site be cleaned and all slash removed so that it doesn't wash into the rivers?

Yes, the consent requires that branches and tree remnants be removed from the site.

When will The Warehouse parking lot reopen?

The Warehouse parking lot will reopen on Tuesday 19 November. However, lower Tarbert Street will remain closed just beyond the carpark entrance to enable ongoing construction of the toilet and access ramp.
