Why is Council developing this strategy? Will action plans follow?

The purpose of the strategy is to articulate Central Otago’s vision for economic development and how we are going to get there. Although the Council cannot control every aspect of the economy, it remains deeply committed to addressing the broad range of issues that impact the wellbeing of Central Otago’s communities and has different levers to achieve these.

The economic development strategy guides the work that Council, alongside agencies and stakeholders give effect to.  Annual work plans will be produced and approved by Council, these workplans will outline the activities and projects that we will focus on over the next year.

I’m not a businessperson, why should I get involved?

This strategy is for everyone. Economic development is about lifting the standard of living for our community through influencing economic growth that aligns with our values. You might have ideas about the economic aspirations for our community, and the opportunities or activities that could be undertaken to get there.

I provided feedback during pre-consultation; do you want to hear from me again?

Yes! We want to make sure that what we heard from you is reflected in the strategy. If you are a pushed for time feel free to check out our Plan on the a page (page 10), or use the key word search in the document to look up your main points.

    What are the next steps?

Community engagement finishes 28 November.  The finalised draft will be presented to Council early 2026 for adoption. Annual workplans will then be produced and presented to Council, these workplans will outline the activities and projects that we will focus on over the next year.
