Background

Discussion has been taking place for the past few months at the Cromwell Community Board (CCB) about utilising the 93.49-hectare reserve on Ripponvale Road (Cromwell Racecourse Reserve), to meet the future recreational needs of sustained population growth in Cromwell.

The Cromwell Reserves Supply and Demand Assessment (2022) concluded that the current provision of sports fields in Cromwell is insufficient to meet projected population growth and growing participation in field sports. Central Otago’s population is forecast to increase by over 26 percent by 2040, with Cromwell’s population alone expected to grow to more than 8,000 residents. This growth is expected to place significant pressure on existing reserves and infrastructure.

The reserve aims to support both equestrian use and a broader range of community recreational activities. This work identified that with careful planning and realignment of activities over time, the site could accommodate both.

What's the plan?

To respond to population growth and increasing demand for sporting and recreational spaces in Cromwell, a new Reserve Management Plan (RMP) is required to reflect current use and future aspirations for the reserve, provide a framework for future development and decision-making, identify and address any constraints, conflicts, or opportunities; and meet the obligations of the Reserves Act 1977, including the requirement to keep management plans under continuous review.

How to get involved

The draft Cromwell Racecourse Reserve Management Plan (draft Management Plan) and layout maps are available at all Council Service Centres and Libraries. You can also find copies at the Cromwell Pool and Cromwell College. Click here to have your say. The last day to provide feedback is Monday 14 July, 5pm.
