Cromwell Racecourse Reserve Management Plan
Help shape the future of sport and community space in Cromwell
Cromwell is growing, and so is the demand for sport, recreation, and open space. The Cromwell Racecourse Reserve has the potential to serve the whole community, with space for sports fields, equestrian use, event space, and more.
This is about planning ahead, together.
What's happening?
Council is developing a Reserve Management Plan for the 93.49-hectare Cromwell Racecourse Reserve on Ripponvale Road, currently used for equestrian and recreational activities. Existing sports fields are not sufficient to meet the needs of a growing population.
This plan is about unlocking the reserve’s potential while continuing to support existing uses and making room for future generations.
What’s proposed for the Cromwell Racecourse Reserve?
This draft Reserve Management Plan outlines a long-term vision that balances current use with future needs. It proposes:
4 new sports fields by 2030, expanding to
8 sports fields by 2045
A future indoor hub or shared community facility
Space for equestrian activities, events, recreation, and green open space
Improved access, including a proposed underpass and connections to the Cromwell greenway network
Anderson Park and Alpha Street Reserve also form part of Cromwell’s sport and recreation network. Anderson Park would be reconfigured to improve its layout and function, while Alpha Street would largely stay the same.
As the surrounding land is developed for housing, the Racecourse Reserve will become a key part of Cromwell’s heart, not its edge.
The key proposals
To fully understand what’s planned, please read the Draft Reserve Management Plan and view the proposed layout maps for Cromwell Racecourse Reserve, Anderson Park, and Alpha Street Reserve.
What's the plan?
We’re preparing a new Reserve Management Plan (RMP) to provide a framework for future development and decision-making, to identify and address constraints, opportunities, and potential conflicts, and meet obligations under the Reserves Act 1977.
