From 1 July 2023 the kerbside collection service available in Central Otago will be made up of four wheelie bins. These are for:

Food scraps and greenwaste (organics) – green bin: This will be a 240L bin. This will be your existing red bin with a lid change, which will be completed before July. This bin will collect all food scraps (not including liquids or oils) and greenwaste. There will be an option to pay for multiple bins. This food scraps and greenwaste service will be collected weekly.

Mixed recycling – yellow bin: This will remain a 240L bin with the addition of a bin clip, which will be attached to your yellow bin before July. This bin will collect clean paper and cardboard, aluminium and steel cans, and plastic packaging items numbers 1, 2 and 5. This service is designed to take household grocery, bathroom and laundry-type packaging only. Plastic containers over 3L in size are not accepted. There will be an option to pay for multiple bins. This mixed recycling service will remain collected fortnightly.

Glass – blue bin: This will remain a 240L bin. It will collect clean and empty glass bottles and glass jars. There will be an option to pay for multiple bins. This glass recycling service will be increased to be collected monthly.

General waste – red bin: This will be a new 140L bin which will be delivered to properties before July. There will be an option to pay for a larger 240L bin and to have multiple bins. This general waste service will be collected fortnightly.

PROPOSED COSTS

The proposed standard rate for the new four bin kerbside collection is $500-550 p.a.

Please note that Council is currently in the process of fixing rates and fees and charges for the 2023-24 Annual Plan. This cost will be preliminary until the costs have been confirmed, which is expected to be completed in April/May 2023.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

We would like to know if you think this new kerbside collection bin configuration will suit your business waste needs and whether you would choose to opt out of this service, if there was an option to do so.

Please note that businesses that operate out of a residential address will be rated to receive the four bin kerbside collection service. Additional bins will be available to be purchased if needed.

Please complete the survey below by 5pm, Wednesday 1 March.
